My approach to the work that I create is an immersive one. My "Spicework Series", an ongoing collection of mixed media paintings, incorporates various spices, and at its earliest stages, is an act of spiritual work. Incorporating teachings and creative stylings of both my maternal and paternal grandmothers, I use these pieces as means of paying respect to the maternal lineage and influence that has shaped much of my creative and personal identity. This is something I'd referenced early on in my work, having utilized Bustelo regularly, an espresso brand, and a staple in my grandmother's home. Naturally, what had become of this, was an exploration inward. Presenting itself as a conduit of sorts, I explore a newfound autonomy in this current stage of adulthood, allowing me to delve into theories around safety and familial personhood.
